Florida Teachers Take Up Attorney On His Offer For Free Living Wills

Hundreds of teachers around the state are taking a St. Petersburg lawyer up on his offer to set up living wills for free.

Charles Gallagher put out an ad on Facebook, offering the service to teachers who are being "involuntarily forced to return to the classroom."

The directive will allow a teacher to designate a person to make emergency decisions for them, if the coronavirus strikes and they become incapacitated, or worse.

"They're also going to check off certain areas that, in the event that they have an end-stage condition."

Jennifer Douglas is one of his new clients. The St. Lucie County art teacher says she feels she'll be risking her life when goes back in the classroom on August 24th.

"I am absolutely terrified."

Douglas says that she understands why tough decisions had to be made when it comes to reopening schools but it doesn't take away the fear that her life may be on the line to continue to do the job she's loved for the past 25 years.

"I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out what's going to happen and that's very very concerning for the health of myself, my family, my co-workers."

The school district is offering parents the option of sending their kids to school or having them learn from home, from a live teacher who is in the class with other students.

CBS12 News reached out to the St. Lucie County School District regarding what options they will offer to teachers when it comes to teaching remotely. That's something Governor Ron DeSantis has often said should be considered.
