Hurricane Otis Slams Coast Of Mexico; Tammy Strengthening

Hurricane Otis has made landfall near Acapulco as a Category 5 storm. The National Hurricane Center says the center of the storm hit the coast of south Mexico shortly after midnight with sustained winds of 165 miles per hour. Otis is expected to weaken as it moves over the mountains, but forecasters warn it could cause devastating damage along the coast, including storm surge, flooding and mudslides.

Satellite data from the National Hurricane Center in Miami indicates that Category 2 hurricane Tammy has strengthened this morning with 100 mph maximum sustained winds.

Although vertical wind shear is analyzed to have increased over the hurricane, the system is strengthening beneath upper-level divergence associated with a deep-layer trough over the western Atlantic. Models suggest some additional strengthening is possible over the next 12 hours or so, Tammy is then expected to merge with a cold front and undergo an extratropical transition, with this transition forecast to be complete within 24 hours.
