Orange County Health Director: Vaccinating Children Would Be Game Changer

Pfizer says it plans to submit to the FDA results of a trial of its COVID vaccine in children ages five to eleven which showed the vaccine led to antibody responses that were comparable to those in people ages 16 to 25 who got the shots. Orange County Health Director Dr. Raul Pino says being able to vaccinate that age group would be huge-

"Having access to vaccines for that age group is going to mean the beginning of the end of the pandemic," Dr. Pino said. "When you open it up to a larger segment of the population, then we can really be more effective in interfering with transmission."

Vaccine side effects in children were also similar to those 16 to 25 who got the shots.

Meanwhile, Orange County's rolling positivity rate has fallen to 11.2-percent- down from a high of more than 20-percent. Testing and vaccinations continue.

"I'm pleased to announce that our three county-run testing sites and our vaccination site at Camping World Stadium have been extended," Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said. "We will add the opportunity to be tested and vaccinated through the month of October."

August was the deadliest month in Orange County since the start of the pandemic with 388 deaths and we could see more than 400 deaths in September. The average age of those who died in August was 69.
