FLORIDA - A massive holiday travel wave is sweeping across the country as Americans gear up for Independence Day, with Orlando expected to be the number one travel hotspot.
According to AAA, more than 72 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between June 28th and July 6th, making it the busiest July Fourth on record.
Florida is expected to see over 4 million residents take to the roads, while 61 million Americans nationwide will drive to their destinations, the highest number ever recorded.
Air travel is also breaking records, with nearly 6 million passengers expected to fly during the holiday week.
The Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol gathered in Orlando to warn drivers about increased traffic dangers.
Officials say July 2 and July 6 will be the most congested travel days.
Officials from FDOT encouraged drivers facing car trouble to dial *FHP or *347 for roadside assistance.
Last year’s holiday week saw nearly 700,000 emergency calls for flat tires and dead batteries, and this year’s volume is expected to climb even higher.
FDOT urged travelers to inspect their vehicles, buckle up, stay alert and avoid distractions.
Safety experts say planning ahead and leaving early in the day can help drivers avoid delays.
Florida Highway Patrol is especially urging parents to speak with teen drivers about staying safe.
