Orlando, FL - The family of Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who died after riding Universal Orlando Resort’s Stardust Racers roller coaster, is demanding that the ride be closed following a new report of a restraint malfunction.
Zavala, 32, was pronounced dead at a hospital after experiencing severe injuries on the ride, which investigators linked to multiple blunt impacts.
Attorney Ben Crump, representing Zavala’s family, released a statement noting that the same type of restraint issue allegedly involved in Zavala’s death occurred again shortly after the ride reopened.
Witnesses report that a lap bar failed to lock properly, requiring several attempts by a ride operator to secure it before the ride began.
Universal Orlando Resort has stated that Stardust Racers underwent thorough inspections by its own team, the manufacturer, state regulators, and a third-party engineering firm prior to reopening.
The company says that all ride systems were tested and confirmed to be functioning properly.
Following the incident, Universal updated its safety procedures to require that guests using mobility devices be able to walk independently before boarding.
Despite these measures, Zavala’s family argues that the ride remains unsafe until a full investigation is completed and the restraint system is verified as secure.
Other park visitors have reportedly experienced similar issues, prompting additional concern over ride safety.
The family continues to call for the suspension of operations until all safety questions are addressed and proper protocols are confirmed.
