Tampa, FL - Tampa city officials are reviewing plans for a new 250-foot observation wheel called Tampa WOW, which would be located just north of the Florida Aquarium in the Channelside district.
Developer Tony Miller presented the proposal to the Tampa City Council, noting the attraction would occupy about one-third of an acre of city-owned land leased to the aquarium. The $20 million project is privately funded and, if approved, is expected to open in 2026.
The wheel would feature climate-controlled gondolas designed for 20- to 30-minute rides, offering panoramic views of Tampa Bay, downtown Tampa, and surrounding areas.
Additional features include food and beverage concessions and luggage storage for cruise passengers.
Miller said the ride would be “whisper quiet,” built to withstand hurricane-force winds, and could be partially dismantled during severe weather.
Lighting can be dimmed or turned off at night to reduce impact on the neighborhood.
Supporters, including Visit Tampa Bay and the Florida Aquarium, said the project could provide a new way for residents and visitors to experience the city and boost tourism.
However, some local residents expressed concerns about traffic, bright lights, and the visual impact of a structure taller than nearby buildings.
Residents within roughly 1,000 feet of the proposed site spoke at the council meeting about potential congestion and changes to the neighborhood’s character.
City Council members also questioned whether granting a height exception for this project could set a precedent for future developments.
Thursday’s presentation served as the first reading, with the council scheduled to revisit the proposal before taking a final vote.
If approved, Tampa WOW would join other waterfront attractions and become a prominent feature on the city’s skyline.
