Mayor: Deputy Dead Serving Eviction Notice in Indian River County

(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Mayor is confirming that an Indian River county sheriff's deputy was shot to death and at least two others injured while serving an eviction notice at Bermuda Bay on Orchid Island.

In a multi-agency response, up to 10 emergency vehicles are on scene south of Wabasso Causeway on State Road A1A. The county's air ambulance has transported some of the injured to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.

According to the mayor, John Cotugno, the shooter is dead too.

Residents of Bermuda Bay are being escorted into the development by law enforcement officers, according to the mayor.

Sheriff Eric Flowers will hold a briefing about the incident at the Indian River Shores Public Safety Department.

Police cars and ambulances are beachside, south of Wabasso Causeway on State Road A1A.

An air ambulance landed and left the Indian River County Fairgrounds on 58th Avenue, and a Martin County Fire Rescue helicopter is there.
